Some Facts About Autism

According to the CDC, 1 in 68 children in the United States have an autism spectrum disorder. This includes 1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls.

Autism is nearly 5 times more prevalent in boys than in girls.

From 2000 to 2012, the incidence of autism spectrum disorder reported nationally has risen by 1200 percent, from about 1 in 150 children to 1 in 68 children.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by problems with social interaction and communication and a tendency to engage in repetitive behaviors.

Signs of autism spectrum disorder are usually recognizable by 2 to 3 years of age, but most children are not diagnosed until after age 4. Nemours is working to change that in Delaware, with The Swank Autism Center, which will provide expedited diagnosis.

For children with autism, early identification and treatment can make an extraordinary difference in their ability to thrive during childhood, laying the groundwork for them to reach their full potential. Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children is investing in a new Autism Center that will incorporate cutting-edge research and treatment protocols with leading methods for early diagnosis to give every child the best chance at happiness and success.

Event proceeds will go toward a matching gift challenge that could ultimately generate an additional million dollars for the Autism Center and other neuroscience services Nemours provides for families in the Delaware Valley.

The event is scheduled for: Friday, June 16, 2017, at 6 p.m
